Siew Jia Qi's love for visual arts and literary arts began when she was exposed to various art mediums from a young age and conducted art workshops for children during her days as an arts cub member in secondary school and junior college. Since then, she has gained experience in batik, woodblock printing and porcelain art before discovering a passion for painting, sewing and interacting with children through art. Through her studies in BA(Hons) Arts Management at LASALLE College of the Arts, she has furthered her involvement in the arts industry and hopes to curate an immersive exhibition where children's books come alive.

Thesis abstract

Exploring the ecosystem of the children's literary scene in Singapore

The children’s literary scene in Singapore has been growing over the years with an increasing number of locally written picture books gaining a substantial amount of readership locally, as well as being recognised abroad. However, there is a dearth of holistic study conducted on the children’s literary scene. To gain an insight into the children’s literary landscape in Singapore – particularly picture books – qualitative interviews were conducted to better understand the roles stakeholders play. Using the systems framework, this paper analysed the ecosystem and the interconnectedness between the different stakeholders, and identified that funding is a key challenge. Hence, there is a need for stakeholders to provide diversification to grow readership and build a sustainable business model.
