Thesis abstract

Increasing audience attendance of Teochew opera in contemporary Singapore: understanding the social and political factors affecting audience attendance

Teochew opera was first brought to Singapore by Chinese immigrants with ancestral roots from the Chaoshan region of southern China. While Teochew opera performances were at their prime in Singapore between 1960 – 1970s, the political and social upheavals that Singapore faced in those decades may have directly and indirectly resulted in a decrease in audience attendance of Teochew opera in contemporary Singapore. Hence, this research study focuses on a study of the key political and social factors, and how this has led to a decline in the reception of Teochew opera in contemporary Singapore.
