Exploring theatre accessibility for audiences with sensory disabilities
In recent years, there has been more attention and awareness surrounding disability and accessibility. As a result, theatre organisations have been making conscious efforts to provide access features in order to cater to these audiences. However, are these efforts sufficient? This paper explores the challenges faced by theatre organisations and practitioners in creating an accessible space, more specifically for people with sensory disabilities. In addition, it highlights some of the challenges and considerations that audiences with sensory disabilities encounter within a theatre space. These findings were collected through various research methodologies including surveys, semi-structured interviews and literature review. Through these methods, the results uncovered a need for more financial support for organisations, partnership between organisations and the above-mentioned community as well as the necessity to change mindsets towards disability in Singapore. Obtained results pointed to a need to re-evaluate the ecosystem in Singapore, in order to encourage the full participation of people with sensory disabilities in everyday life.
